2/18/22 Anne Williamson on How the US Sabotaged Russia’s Economy after the Fall of the Soviet Union

Scott interviews former reporter Anne Williamson about the flawed privatization of Russia after the fall of the USSR. While privatization had mixed success across the former Soviet Bloc, Russia ran into problems immediately with a poor definition of property rights. Williamson explains how this was not a mistake but was designed by American economists and businessmen who wanted to hold Russia down while enriching themselves. Williamson connects the dots to show how those policies led, in part, to the rise of Putin and the tension between the West and Russia today.

Discussed on the show:

Anne Williamson is a former reporter who covered Russia for the Wall Street Journal and New York Times during the 1990s.

2/18/22 Ben Freeman on the Army of Ukraine Lobbyists in DC

Ben Freeman joined Scott on Antiwar Radio yesterday to discuss some analysis he recently published that looks at the Ukrainian Government’s lobbying efforts in Washington DC. Freeman combed over records and uncovered over 13,000 political activities that Ukraine reported carrying out in the U.S. during 2021. Among those activities were 2,000 contacts with American media and over 8,000 contacts with Congress. Freeman points out that, although he studies how foreign governments work to influence American politics, this effort by Ukraine is on a whole other level.

2/18/22 Doug Bandow on Yemen and Ukraine

Scott talks with Doug Bandow about the escalation of the war in Yemen and the tension with Russia over Ukraine. Bandow explains why the Hawk’s characterization of Iran’s involvement in Yemen is deceptive. They also discuss how it’s in the interest of every faction with decision-making power to keep the war going. Towards the end, they turn to the situation in eastern Europe. Bandow points to a number of topics that often get left out of discussions on this issue— such as the misdeeds of Ukrainian Nationalists and NATO’s history of pushing Russia around— that help to paint a more realistic picture of what is happening.

2/18/22 Jack Matlock on the Predictable and Avoidable Crisis Over Ukraine

Scott interviews Jack Matlock, former Ambassador to the USSR, about the current situation in eastern Europe. While he can’t imagine Russia will actually invade Ukraine, Matlock points to the last three decades of unnecessary NATO expansion as the catalyst for today’s tension. Impressively, he went on record and testified all the way back in 1997 that expanding NATO would be a mistake. Scott and Matlock also point to the discrepancy between the hysterical political narrative being amplified by the media and the actual diplomatic progress as a source for rational optimism.
