1/27/23 Eric Margolis on the Rush to All Out War Over Ukraine
Eric Margolis returns to the show to talk about the war in Ukraine. Scott reflects on some of his early interviews with Margolis about Ukraine back in 2014. Just as he had said back then, Margolis sees some disturbing parallels between the modern tension in Eastern Europe and the build-up to World War One. Scott and Margolis talk about the mission creep happening with the West agreeing to send more and more provocative weapons while Russia claims sovereignty over territory it doesn’t even control. Notably, the two talk about how Crimea may be the big flashpoint. Margolis also points out that Washington is making all the same mistakes over Taiwan.

1/27/23 Ryan McMaken on How the Fed Is Ripping Us Off
Ryan McMaken of the Mises Institute joins Scott to discuss the ill effects central banking has on the country. McMaken wrote an article recently pointing out that the Federal Reserve, America’s central bank, is technically bankrupt. Scott has McMaken explains how that’s true and why the costs of a bankrupt Fed are felt by us all. Scott and McMaken also address some common points about inflation made by the left and examine what they get right and where they go wrong. The two also look at today’s economy to try and work out where we are in the boom-bust cycle.
Discussed on the show:

- What Has Government Done to Our Money?
- For a New Liberty: The Libertarian Manifesto
Ryan McMaken is a senior editor at the Mises Institute. 1/27/23 Ted Snider: Were the Minsk Agreements a Lie?
Scott talks with Ted Snider about former German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s recent claim that the Minsk agreements were never meant to bring peace to the Donbas. Merkel said that instead, they were implemented to give Ukraine time to build up its military. Some are doubting whether Merkel’s comments are true, but Snider explains why this is a big deal whether she’s lying or not. Scott and Snider explore the dynamic around the Minsk agreements and examine the crucial years between the 2014 ousting of Yanukovych and the 2022 invasion. They also touch on where things stand today and on whether the best window for negotiation has already passed.
Discussed on the show:

- “The U.S. Approach to Ukraine’s Border War Isn’t Working. Here’s What Biden Should Do Instead” (Politico)

1/26/23 David Swanson on What Russia Could Have Done Instead of Invading Ukraine
Scott brings on David Swanson to discuss the war in Ukraine. Scott and many of his guests have spent a lot of time explaining all the ways the U.S. and NATO unnecessarily backed Russia into a corner. But there are, in fact, plenty of things Moscow could have done to address the situation that didn’t involve invading Ukraine—which has only emboldened NATO and destroyed countless lives and livelihoods. Scott and Swanson also discuss the Rage Against the War Machine rally on February 19th in Washington DC where they will both be speaking.

1/26/23 Kyle Anzalone on Escalations over Ukraine and Zelensky’s “Anti-Corruption” Measures
Kyle Anzalone joined Scott on Antiwar Radio this week to go over some of the week’s biggest stories. They talked about the German Foreign Minister’s admission that NATO is fighting a war against Russia. Of course we all know that’s the case, but Scott and Anzalone discuss why it’s a big deal that the FM said it out loud and on the record. They then talk about the deal to send heavy tanks to Ukraine and the immediate pivot made by Kyiv and its western supporters to now push for sending F-16 fighters. They put these escalations in context and also discuss weapons company lobbying, the Doomsday Clock and Zelensky’s apparent anti-corruption maneuvers.
Discussed on the show:

- “Lockheed Says It’s Ready With F-16s If US and Allies Choose to Send Them to Ukraine” (Antiwar.com)

1/19/23 Ara Sanjian Explains the Nagorno-Karabakh Conflict
Scott speaks with Ara Sanjian, an Associate Professor of History at the University of Michigan-Dearborn, about the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the region of Nagorno-Karabakh. This is an excellent interview for listeners unfamiliar with the situation. Scott and Sanjian go over the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict more broadly before focusing on the flare-up over Nagorno-Karabakh in 2020 and the state of things today. The conflict also has notable international implications with the Russian government backing Armenia and the Turkish government backing Azerbaijan. Scott and Sanjian explore the international ramifications of this dispute on an already messy world stage.
Ara Sanjian is an Associate Professor of History and the Director of the Armenian Research Center at the University of Michigan-Dearborn. He received his master’s degree in history from Yerevan State University (1991) and PhD in Modern History of the Middle East from the School of Oriental and African Studies, the University of London in 1996.

1/19/23 Branko Marcetic: Cables Expose Washington’s NATO Expansion Lies
Scott talks with Branko Marcetic about some cables he recently dug up that show U.S. officials and western governments voicing concern about Russia’s reaction to NATO expansion going back to the 1990s. Marcetic’s work adds to the evidence that shatters the argument that anyone connecting NATO expansion to the February invasion is either an amplifier or victim of a Russian disinformation operation. Scott and Marcetic go over what he found and zoom out to examine the broader context.
Discussed on the show:

- “Ignoring Gorbachev’s Warnings” (Current Affairs)
- “‘Now or Never’: The Immediate Origins of Putin’s Preventative War on Ukraine” (Journal of Military and Strategic Studies)

1/13/23 Bjorn Handeen on Using Local Politics to End the Wars
Scott talks with Bjorn Handeen, a long-time listener who is now the Idaho Republican Party Region 1 Chairman. The two talk about Handeen’s efforts to translate his knowledge of American foreign policy into results by focusing on local politicians. Unlike some of the big names in today’s Congress, politicians on the county and state levels are often totally uninformed about international issues, which can make them relatively open-minded if only you’re able to get in their ear. Handeen says you’ll be surprised how much access you’ll get to local legislators if you just start showing up. They talk about when democratic institutions can be an effective tool in the non-interventionist effort. And they also look back and reflect on Scott’s early interviews.
Discussed on the show:
- The Sorrows of Empire by Chalmers Johnson
- Nemesis by Chalmers Johnson
- Newspapers.com
- “Korean War at 69: Truman, Treaties, and the Bricker Amendment” (Antiwar.com)
Bjorn Handeen is the Idaho Republican Party Region 1 Chairman representing Boundary, Bonner, Kootenai, Shoshone and Benewah Counties. He’s also a longtime listener of the Scott Horton Show. Follow him on Twitter @BjornHandeen
