6/6/24 Branko Marcetic on the Unnecessary, Futile and Dangerous Prolongation of the War in Ukraine
Scott interviews Branko Marcetic about what’s happening with the war in Ukraine. They discuss the recent Russian proposals to move the conflict from the battlefield to the negotiation table and the West’s ongoing refusal. They also take a step back and review all the missed opportunities to bring the war to an end that would have left Ukraine better off with more leverage than surely will have in any future peace process.
Discussed on the show:
- “Putin may be at the door. Why is Biden ignoring the bell?” (Responsible Statecraft)
- Debate – Should the U.S. Fund Ukraine War Again?
Branko Marcetic is a writer for Jacobin Magazine, a fellow at In These Times, and host of the 1/200 podcast. He is the author of Yesterday’s Man: The Case Against Joe Biden. Follow him on Twitter @BMarchetich.

3/26/19 Ray McGovern was Right About Russiagate
Scott talks to Ray McGovern about the release of the Mueller report, which confirms what McGovern has been saying for more than two years: There’s no evidence that President Trump’s campaign colluded with the Russians in 2016. McGovern’s organization, Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity, has long questioned the claims of the mainstream media, offering proof that the supposed hack of DNC emails was actually an internal leak, possibly from a disgruntled Bernie Sanders supporter. Scott and McGovern bemoan the extreme rarity of honest, reliable journalists left after this debacle.
Discussed on the show:
- Iran–Contra affair
- October surprise
- “It’s official: Russiagate is this generation’s WMD” (taibbi.substack.com)

3/21/19 Danny Sjursen on the Propaganda of the US Empire
Scott talks to Danny Sjursen, who has now finally retired after more than a decade in the U.S. army. Sjursen has been outspoken about his opposition to the American war state throughout most of his time in the military, and points out that the United States has lost on basically every single foreign policy goal since 9/11. He wonders when people will realize that they live under an empire, and finally reject all of the propaganda.

3/20/19 Peter Van Buren on Paul Manafort’s Downfall
Scott interviews Peter Van Buren about the Russia investigation, which he says is shaping up not to amount to much. Members of Mueller’s team have started resigning already, and given the fact that they haven’t found anything substantial in almost three years, Van Buren thinks there’s nothing substantial to find. He conjectures that Mueller may try to bring President Trump up on charges of obstructing an investigation, but that wouldn’t make a ton of sense since he would have been obstructing an investigation that didn’t find any wrongdoing in the first place. Unfortunately, he says, an obstruction charge can mean just about anything the prosecutor wants it to mean.
Discussed on the show:
- “Paul Manafort: Eulogy for a Straw Man” (The American Conservative)
- “NSA Spying” (Electronic Frontier Foundation)
- The FBI Files
- Colour revolution
Peter Van Buren worked for 24 years at the Department of State including a year in Iraq. He is the author of We Meant Well: How I Helped Lose the Battle for the Hearts and Minds of the Iraqi People and the novel Hooper’s War. He is now a contributing editor at The American Conservative magazine.

Nasser Arrabyee gives an update on the war in Yemen, where thanks to U.S. support for the Saudis an entire country is being starved and women and children killed in air strikes. Scott talks to Gareth Porter about war with Iran.
