AP:

A state lawmaker who opposed a law giving Texans a stronger right to defend themselves with deadly force shot a man at the house he is building in Houston, the police said. The lawmaker, Representative Borris L. Miles, a Democrat, told the police he was fixing a leak on the second floor of the house on Sunday when he heard a noise downstairs and saw two men trying to steal copper wiring. Mr. Miles confronted them, and one threw a pocketknife at him, said Victor Senties, a police spokesman. Mr. Miles, a former law enforcement officer, shot the man in the leg, the police said. The man was being treated at a Houston hospital, and charges of aggravated robbery were pending against him, the spokesman said.
