How many people would happily surrender most of their constitutional rights in return for a president’s promise that he will thereby make them safe? Many Americans are far more interested in being cared for than being left alone. This is why American democracy is becoming one of caretakers and cage keepers, instead of representatives with narrowly prescribed duties.”
