The limited resources (our species hit the carrying capacity only recently and had to start growing crops and build cities to defend themselves), the division of labor in a large society is the cause of it. A way for a free society to exist is to establish a colony on another planet. What kept Spartans from imperialism at the level of Athens was because they had to police their slave population. Sparta did go to war. Empire murders liberalism and overthrows democracy so how does it protect these things? I think MCarthy is taking the Project for a New American Century viewpoint. Europe can be filled with peace loving hippies, but the US must shoulder the burden of Empire to keep the Europeans in this safety bubble society where they can practice multiculturalism without fear of war, and the taint of Empire.
