Drone expert Alyssa Sims joins Scott to talk about the strikes in Libya and the difficulty in getting accurate estimates of civilian casualties. She explains that in some cases researchers have to resort to finding pictures of dead bodies on social media and cross-referencing the posts with times and locations of known drone strikes. Sims also discusses the unintended consequences from the UN intervention in Libya, supposedly to help the civilian victims of Gaddafi’s tyranny—but of course, once the Libyan leader was ousted warring militias, now armed with U.S. and UN weapons, fought each other for control. The resulting power vacuum has been worse in many ways than Gaddafi’s rule was in the first place.

Ray McGovern, co-founder of Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity, comes back on the show to talk about “Russia-gate”, Wikileaks, and President Trump’s efforts at diplomacy. McGovern outlines how the military-industrial complex—which he lumps in with congress and the mainstream media as well—have too much money at stake for them to support world peace. So even though public support seems to be on the side of Trump meeting with Kim and Putin, the media consistently criticize him for it. In another example, Putin recently announced Russia’s possession of supersonic missiles capable of bypassing today’s detection systems. These weapons have been in development for years, and yet we’ve never heard anything about them until now. McGovern wonders how this can be. It’s not possible, he says, that the intelligence community and the journalists who cover them didn’t know about these weapons—therefore, they must have been keeping quiet on purpose to protect the arms manufacturers that make the now-obsolete anti-missile systems. Finally, McGovern discusses his recent article “Did Sen. Warner and Comey ‘Collude’ on Russia-gate?“, which outlines how Assange tried to use “Vault 7” DNC emails to negotiate immunity for himself before James Comey got wind of the deal and put the brakes on. The reason? Assange’s emails revealed an NSA tool that allows totally anonymous hacking of anyone’s computer, and includes the ability to leave behind fake clues to frame someone else—including, for example, the Russians specifically.

Investigative columnist Jim Bovard joins the show to discuss the latest news from the FBI, as well as its history of meddling in American politics. Lots of people have been shocked by the revelations in the recent Inspector General report about the bias of top FBI officials in the 2016 election, but few are aware of the Bureau’s long tradition of underhandedness. Bovard explains how J. Edgar Hoover’s FBI deliberately leaked on the Truman administration, spread rumors that Adlai Stevenson was gay, investigated the Goldwater presidential campaign, conspired against Martin Luther King’s plans to hold a demonstration at the 1964 Democratic Convention, and worked against President Nixon, culminating in his resignation—and that’s just the stuff we already know. Bovard is optimistic about what has come out from 2016 so far, and hopes that more will emerge as scrutiny continues. One positive sign, he notes, is that although the mainstream media seems perfectly willing to shill for the FBI, juries are becoming less and less likely to believe them.

Jacob Hornberger joins Scott to talk about U.S. foreign and domestic policy. In particular, he wonders why, with so much outrage about family separation at the border, few seem to care about the impact U.S. sanctions have on foreign children. Hornberger says this highlights a difference between liberals and leftists—principled leftists have opposed Clinton, Bush, Obama, and Trump for their foreign policy, and didn’t support Hillary Clinton for the same reasons. Most American Democrats, however, protest Republican policies but have nothing to say about the same from their side of the aisle. They go on to discuss America as a national security state, with Hornberger claiming that this “fourth branch of government,” comprising the CIA, NSA, FBI and the like, is actually the most powerful of all.

Kathy Kelly joins Scott to talk about everyday life in Afghanistan for the civilians affected by the war. She explains the damage a continuing U.S. military presence has had on an already troubled country, where harsh winters and arid summers can make bare survival a challenge. Thanks to United States occupation Kabul, once the safest and wealthiest part of Afghanistan, is now one of the most dangerous. All over the country, clean rain water and snow melt have become tainted with sewage, and basic commodities like food and fuel are hard to come by. So why have American forces stayed there? Some argue that military presence will help ensure American interest in Afghanistan’s vast natural resources, but Kelly is more cynical. The harsh reality is that there isn’t enough political security or infrastructure to make that kind of endeavor possible, so pipe dreams of valuable ores and rare earth metals are more likely the cover used by military officials who want to keep bases close to Russia and China.
