7/6/18 Jeffrey Kaye and Thomas Powell on America’s Forgotten War

Scott hosts a joint interview with Jeffrey Kaye and Thomas Powell, who have both written about U.S. use of biological weapons during the Korean War. Because of Korea’s status as America’s “forgotten war”, most Americans are simply unaware of the brutality the United States inflicted on the Korean people, in the way many are with the Vietnam War. In particular, the military dropped “dud” bombs full of bugs carrying deadly diseases, something they had long alleged the Koreans to be doing, but had vowed not to do themselves. In many cases the pilots carrying these bombs had strong misgivings about the practice, and had to be propagandized into going along with it. Their testimony is some of the only source material we have.

7/2/18 Grant F. Smith: U.S. Violating Its Own Laws for Israeli Nukes

Grant F. Smith rejoins the show to talk about the Israeli nuclear weapons program, and why no one seems willing to talk about it. He explains the scandalous facts that every American president quite literally agrees not to mention Israeli nukes, and that the U.S. government gives hundreds of billions in aid to Israel, even though U.S. law prohibits aid to countries that haven’t signed the Non-proliferation Treaty. Grant and Scott discuss anecdotes about Presidents Clinton and Trump meeting with Netanyahu for the first time, and being surprised with his presumptuousness—the U.S. president supposedly learns very quickly just how powerful Israel is in the American government, and where the presumptuousness comes from. Even President Obama, who entered office on a non-proliferation platform, quickly caved to Israel’s interests.

7/2/18 Patrick Cockburn on Life in Baghdad

Patrick Cockburn joins Scott to talk about daily life in Baghdad. He explains that although things have gotten better now that Isis has been pushed back somewhat, people still fear for their return—it wouldn’t be the first time this has happened. One of the central questions for Iraq has been figuring out who will take power in the many majority-Sunni areas in the aftermath of Iraq War III. The Sadrists did well in recent elections on a platform of limiting U.S. and Iranian influence, and trying to have Sunnis and Shiites get along instead of fighting.

Discussed on the show:

  • “Iraq isn’t as dangerous as it was – but many still live in fear” (Independent)
  • Muqtada al-Sadr

6/29/18 Alyssa Sims on Drone Strikes in Libya

Drone expert Alyssa Sims joins Scott to talk about the strikes in Libya and the difficulty in getting accurate estimates of civilian casualties. She explains that in some cases researchers have to resort to finding pictures of dead bodies on social media and cross-referencing the posts with times and locations of known drone strikes. Sims also discusses the unintended consequences from the UN intervention in Libya, supposedly to help the civilian victims of Gaddafi’s tyranny—but of course, once the Libyan leader was ousted warring militias, now armed with U.S. and UN weapons, fought each other for control. The resulting power vacuum has been worse in many ways than Gaddafi’s rule was in the first place.

  • “The U.S. Has Conducted 550 Drone Strikes in Libya Since 2011 — More Than in Somalia, Yemen, or Pakistan” (Intercept)

6/29/18 Ray McGovern on the Military-industrial Complex and the DNC Emails

Ray McGovern, co-founder of Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity, comes back on the show to talk about “Russia-gate”, Wikileaks, and President Trump’s efforts at diplomacy. McGovern outlines how the military-industrial complex—which he lumps in with congress and the mainstream media as well—have too much money at stake for them to support world peace. So even though public support seems to be on the side of Trump meeting with Kim and Putin, the media consistently criticize him for it. In another example, Putin recently announced Russia’s possession of supersonic missiles capable of bypassing today’s detection systems. These weapons have been in development for years, and yet we’ve never heard anything about them until now. McGovern wonders how this can be. It’s not possible, he says, that the intelligence community and the journalists who cover them didn’t know about these weapons—therefore, they must have been keeping quiet on purpose to protect the arms manufacturers that make the now-obsolete anti-missile systems. Finally, McGovern discusses his recent article “Did Sen. Warner and Comey ‘Collude’ on Russia-gate?“, which outlines how Assange tried to use “Vault 7” DNC emails to negotiate immunity for himself before James Comey got wind of the deal and put the brakes on. The reason? Assange’s emails revealed an NSA tool that allows totally anonymous hacking of anyone’s computer, and includes the ability to leave behind fake clues to frame someone else—including, for example, the Russians specifically.
