7/27/18 Stu Smallwood on North Korea
Stu Smallwood comes back on the show to talk about President Trump’s negotiations with North Korea and what the media is saying about them. One thing that’s frequently omitted is President Moon’s leading role in the talks, which Smallwood sees as fulfillment of Moon’s years-long promise to seek peace on the peninsula. Smallwood is skeptical that we’ll see total denuclearization, given that North Korea seems to see their nuclear weapons as one of the only deterrents against military action by the U.S. and its allies, but seeking peace is certainly better than the “Washington consensus” of sanctions and animosity.
Discussed on the show:
- “US Maximalist Stance on Denuclearization Holds Korean Peace Process Hostage” (Antiwar.com)
- “North Korea Criticizes ‘Gangster-Like’ U.S. Attitude After Talks With Mike Pompeo” (New York Times)
- “Did John Bolton Leak Intelligence to Sabotage a Trump-Kim Deal?” (Truthdig)
- “North Korea: US blocks sanctions exemption for sports equipment” (The Guardian)
- “North Korea Hands Over Possible Remains Of U.S. Servicemen Killed In Korean War” (NPR)
- “North Korea Starts Dismantling Key Missile Facilities, Report Says” (New York Times)
- Korean Armistice Agreement
- No Gun Ri massacre
- Non-Proliferation Treaty
- Agreed Framework
- Sunshine Policy
Stu Smallwood lived in Korea for eight years and now writes about the US empire in Korea for Antiwar.com and Global Research. Follow him on Twitter @stu_smallwood.

7/27/18 Tom Streithorst on America’s Real Motives for War
Tom Streithorst joins Scott to talk about his latest article, “War Doesn’t Make Sense Anymore,” in which he outlines his theory of America’s modern wars: We no longer care about winning wars at all, we just do it to make money. Of course, it’s only the political class and the military industrial complex who make any money, never mind the innocent foreigners—and Americans—we kill along the way.
Discussed on the show:
- “War Doesn’t Make Sense Anymore” (The American Conservative)
- Fool’s Errand
- Slant drilling
- Ali al-Sistani

7/23/18 Phil Giraldi on the Russia Indictment
Phil Giraldi, former CIA officer, comes back on the show to talk about the recent Russia indictment, which he claims just doesn’t add up. For instance, why launch a criminal investigation into foreign intelligence officers that you could never prosecute in the United States? And if the indicted Russians do show up in court, the Justice Department will have to reveal its intel, normally the last thing they’d want to do. This level of intel also suggests a high-up source inside Russian intelligence, but bringing this indictment will almost certainly cause the GRU to find the source and stop any further leaks. He makes his case in depth in his recent article, “The Establishment Strikes Back.”
Discussed on the show:
- “The Establishment Strikes Back” (unz.com)
- “Game On – East vs. West, again” (Harper’s)
- “Mueller’s Politicized Indictment of Twelve Russian Intelligence Officers” (National Review)
- “Candid camera: Dutch hacked Russians hacking DNC, including security cameras” (arstechnica.com)
- “12/13/16 Craig Murray: DNC, Podesta emails leaked by Americans, not hacked by Russia” (Libertarian Institute)
Phil Giraldi is a former CIA Case Officer and Army Intelligence Officer who spent twenty years overseas in Europe and the Middle East working terrorism cases. He is the executive director for the Council for the National Interest and writes regularly for The American Conservative Magazine and Antiwar.com.

7/23/18 Trita Parsi on Iran
Trita Parsi discusses President Trump’s recent showdown with President Rouhani over Twitter. Some have suggested that much like with North Korea, Trump is simply using harsh language as a tactic to set up negotiations, but, Parsi argues, in the case of North Korea, the rest of the region were American allies who also wanted peace—in this case Iran’s neighbors are not friendly toward America, and may even stand to gain from a war with Iran.
Discussed on the show:

Trita Parsi is the president of the National Iranian American Council and the author of Losing an Enemy: Obama, Iran and the Triumph of Diplomacy. Parsi is the recipient of the 2010 Grawemeyer Award for Ideas Improving World Order. Follow him on Twitter: @tparsi.
