8/24/18 Gilbert Doctorow on Trump’s Diplomacy
Gilbert Doctorow makes the case that President Trump’s seemingly clumsy diplomacy has actually had a positive effect on the international order, sometimes by accident, but largely through Trump’s own efforts to disguise his machinations as ham-handedness. Doctorow explains that had President Trump openly moved for a disruption of our alliances and a greater focus on his “America first” policies, he would have been met with greater opposition and perhaps even “removal”. As it stands, however, what appear to be souring relationships in Europe may actually be exactly what Trump wanted in the first place.
Discussed on the show:
- “Reordering Power in Europe: The Putin-Merkel Meeting” (Antiwar.com)
Gilbert Doctorow is an independent political analyst and was the European Coordinator of The American Committee for East-West Accord. He writes regularly for Consortium News. His latest book is “Does the United States Have a Future?”

8/22/18 Bruce Fein on the American Empire
Bruce Fein joins Scott to talk about U.S. complicity in war crimes by supporting brutal regimes oversees. He points out that according to international law, if the United States supports a country that’s at war, it becomes a co-belligerent and can legitimately be attacked, just like the original country. Unfortunately, despite some rhetoric to the contrary, President Trump seems just as willing as his predecessors to engage in unconstitutional wars and executive overreach.
Discussed on the show:
- “Trump Wields Signing Statements, Carves Up Defense Bill” (The American Conservative)
- “U.S.-backed Saudi Airstrike On Family With Nine Children Shows “Clear Violations” Of The Laws Of War” (The Intercept)

8/20/18 Simone Chun on the Korean Peace Process
Korea analyst Simone Chun comes on the show for an update on the Korean peace process. As usual, bipartisan opposition to Trump looms large, even with respect to policies that should have universal popularity, like peace on the Korean Peninsula. Chun explains how the media continue to ignore the fact that the negotiations are really led by Korean leaders, and the Trump mostly just refuses to put the kibosh on the talks, the way previous American presidents have. They probably want to do this so that they can stir up opposition to peace, with the ultimate goal of keeping our troops there (forever). Chun also discusses the tragic family separation that’s a byproduct of a divided Korea.
Discussed on the show:
- “Toward A Truly Indigenous Peace in The Korean Peninsula” (Common Dreams)
- Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty
- Camp Humphreys
- “Sea of Tears: The Tragedy of Families Split by the Korean War” (Common Dreams)
Simone Chun is a member of the Korea Policy Institute and the Korea Peace Network, and is on the steering committee for the Alliance of Scholars Concerned about Korea. Read her work at Common Dreams.
