08/14/12 – Marjorie Cohn – The Scott Horton Show

Law professor Marjorie Cohn discusses the legacy of Agent Orange on millions of Vietnamese civilians and American soldiers; the lawsuits and cleanup efforts still underway (or just beginning); and why you should pressure Congress to pass HR 2634 – The Victims of Agent Orange Relief Act of 2011.

Isn’t this all about U.S. getting back its military base back? The U.S. doesn’t care about the VN people & once it gets it base back, that will be the end of the U.S. efforts to help real people.

That was my immediate thought – how conveniently timed after reports of Uncle Sam wanting back into Cam Rahn Bay.

A famous quote from an American general in the Vietnam war: ” We had to destroy the village in order to save it”. That’s pretty much the philosophy behind using Agent Orange all over Vietnam. To destroy all the jungle so that the VC could not hide in it. We pretty much did the same in Iraq with other means. And when you think about it fracking is the same kind of approach to solving the energy ‘problem’. And drilling in the Arctic and so on. Some day we’ll end up actually destroying the planet ‘in order to save it’.
