03/09/16 – Michael Klare – The Scott Horton Show

Michael T. Klare, a professor of peace and world security studies at Hampshire College, discusses the energy wars between Saudi Arabia and new entries to the oil market, including US shale, Canadian tar sands, and Brazilian off shore producers; and why the oil market has undergone a permanent paradigm shift away from scarcity and high prices.

I’m all for ideals of the government not intervening in economic matters, in the sense of no corporate welfare for export infrastructure or eminent domain. But the massive costs of pumping like there’s no tomorrow are being outsourced to taxpayers and future generations. Set aside a trillion dollars or two for oil spill cleanups, water supply restoration, and the catastrophic consequences of climate change. It’s a simple principle – let anyone do what they like as long as they don’t hurt anyone else.
